Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn rolls out the Safe Songkran campaign, introducing free vehicle inspections, a nationwide 1356 hotline, strict alcohol checks for drivers, and expanded rail services to handle surging holiday travel and boost public safety confidence.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has launched the Safe Songkran campaign, prioritizing three areas to enhance public safety and traveler confidence during the holiday.

In a statement on his official Facebook page, the Deputy Prime Minister announced that the Ministry of Transport is working with the Don’t Drive Drunk Foundation, the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), and the Royal Thai Police to provide comprehensive support for citizens.

The campaign addresses three main areas. First, the ministry has set up free vehicle inspection points and rest areas staffed by vocational volunteer students nationwide. Second, the 1356 Hotline serves as the main channel for reporting road accidents or requesting roadside assistance. Third, authorities have enforced strict alcohol screenings for all public transport drivers and prohibited unauthorized fare increases.

To accommodate increased travel, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has added six special train services, totaling 22 trips, and increased the number of passenger carriages on 210 daily trains. These measures provide capacity for at least 100,000 passengers per day. The Deputy Prime Minister expressed confidence that these expanded services will ensure no passengers are stranded at terminals during the festival. (NNT)
