The RTA says the areas in question lie within Thailand’s sovereignty and urges accurate reporting to avoid misunderstanding and harm to bilateral relations.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Royal Thai Army (RTA) clarified reports by foreign media that cited an interview with Cambodia’s Minister of Information alleging that Thai forces had encroached on civilian areas and continued to control territory claimed by Cambodia despite a ceasefire.

RTA Spokesperson Major General Winthai Suwaree stated that Thailand rejects the allegations, as they do not reflect the actual facts. He explained that the areas referenced are within Thailand’s sovereignty and have been subject to illegal encroachment and settlement for more than 40 years, predating any recent incidents. He stressed that the situation is not a result of the current confrontation.

The spokesperson said Thailand’s actions have been conducted in accordance with international principles and are not intended to encroach on or affect civilians. Over the years, Thailand has addressed the issue through established cooperation mechanisms, including formal notifications and protests through proper channels, and enforcement of domestic laws under defined procedures. These include immigration, forestry, and other relevant laws, implemented systematically by civil authorities and agencies such as the police and the Royal Forest Department.

The spokesperson added that the process has consistently involved public communication, advance notifications, official notices, and continued legal action in line with due process.

The Royal Thai Army called on the Cambodian side to present information accurately and refrain from distorting facts to prevent public misunderstanding that could affect Thailand’s image and undermine cooperation between the two sides. (NNT)
