BANGKOK, 16 March 2011 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health is now monitoring imports of Japanese food for fear of radioactive contamination in the wake of the explosions at nuclear power plants after the deadly quake and tsunami attack in Japan.

Permanent Secretary for Public Health Medical Doctor Paijit Warachit stated that his ministry and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment woould join hands in monitoring leaked radioactivity, which might come to Thailand via the air and food.

The Permanent Secretary said that the measure was not to exacerbate difficulties of Japan but to ensure safety for people. He then asked Thai people not to panic but to have confidence in the potential of Japan to take care of safety of its people and monitor this issue very well.

Regarding food in particular, Doctor Paijit remarked that the ministry would inspect food products imported from Japan by checking with special equipments for any radioactive contamination to ensure safety.

The Permanent Secretary however believed that current food products already imported from Japan had not been contaminated since the incidents had just happened.
