BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has urged Thai diplomats worldwide to adopt a more proactive approach in trade and foreign policy as part of efforts to position Thailand effectively amid global uncertainty. Her policy message was delivered via video during the opening session of the 2025 Annual Meeting of Ambassadors and Consuls-General in Bangkok on June 9.
Addressing the gathering under the theme “Proactive Diplomacy for the People: From Policy to Action,” the Prime Minister stressed the need to build on Thailand’s current advantages while quickly identifying new global opportunities. She described a shifting world order, shaped by growing competition among major powers over trade, technology, and natural resources. These global shifts, she said, require Thailand to strike a careful balance in its international relationships while ensuring that diplomatic efforts deliver real benefits to the Thai economy and people.
The Prime Minister identified five key areas of alignment between Thailand’s foreign policy direction and ASEAN’s shared goals, including enhancing domestic and regional strength, forming partnerships with capable allies, promoting open trade, addressing emerging challenges, and delivering people-centric outcomes. She also underscored the importance of accelerating free trade negotiations and attracting investment in high-potential sectors such as advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, and creative industries. Trade and tourism were singled out as areas where stronger diplomatic engagement can generate sustained growth.
The government is also focusing on major infrastructure projects, including the Landbridge, as well as reforms to improve the ease of doing business. Human capital development remains a top priority, with efforts to build a skilled workforce to support economic resilience. Diplomats were asked to contribute policy proposals that would strengthen Thailand’s global presence and expand economic links.
The annual gathering, taking place from June 8 to June 14 in Bangkok, allows Thai ambassadors and consuls-general to coordinate directly with national policymakers. The forum aligns Thailand’s external strategy with shifting international trends while reinforcing the country’s long-term stability and global relevance. (NNT)
