Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul addresses reporters in Bangkok on Thursday, stressing Thailand’s duty to defend its sovereignty while confirming he has not yet been contacted by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the escalating Thai-Cambodian border tensions.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters on Thursday (Dec 11) he has not yet been contacted by U.S. President Donald Trump, despite the American leader’s statement to international media that he plans to call the prime ministers of Thailand and Cambodia. Anutin, who also serves as Minister of Interior, said such communications between world leaders are not unusual and that all sides should work toward resolving the situation.

If the call takes place, Anutin said Thailand is fully prepared to explain the events along the border and how the situation has unfolded. He added that Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow is already sharing accurate updates with U.S. officials through diplomatic channels.

The prime minister reaffirmed Thailand’s position, saying the country must protect its sovereignty, defend its citizens, and uphold the integrity of its territory. He said Thailand will not be swayed by outside pressure and will continue to act in its own national interest.

Regarding the possibility of returning to talks with Cambodia, Anutin said no country wants prolonged conflict, but maintained that Thailand was the first to be violated. He stated that the country has an obligation to respond and ensure the facts are clearly understood.

Anutin also confirmed that he has already spoken with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and provided Thailand’s assessment of the situation. Tensions remain high along the Thai–Cambodian border, with both diplomatic and military efforts ongoing. (NNT)
