Acting PM Phumtham Wechayachai signals flexibility, saying the coalition is ready to accept all of the People’s Party’s proposals.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, a key figure in the Pheu Thai Party, met with the People’s Party as part of ongoing negotiations to form a new government. Coalition parties have agreed that Pheu Thai will lead the talks, while the People’s Party considers which bloc it will support.

The meeting, held on Sunday (Aug 31), involved representatives from the Chartthaipattana Party, Democrat Party, and Prachachart Party. The United Thai Nation Party also made itself available via video conference. The coalition presented a united front, stressing the urgency of resolving the political deadlock through cooperation.

Phumtham stated that the coalition is ready to accept all of the People’s Party’s proposals and has submitted its own list of policy positions for review. The People’s Party has not yet decided on its support and is expected to hold an internal meeting tomorrow to reach a conclusion.

This round of talks follows the People’s Party’s announcement that it will back whichever group agrees to its core conditions for forming the Cabinet. The coalition’s acceptance of those terms proves a clear strategy to secure its backing.

Among the key issues raised was constitutional reform, which Phumtham said should be treated as a national priority by any incoming government. Discussions on this and other matters are expected to continue in the coming days. (NNT)
