PHUKET, Thailand – Phuket province is preparing security and logistical arrangements for more than 5,000 U.S. Navy personnel expected to visit the island for rest and recreation from October 4–9. The USS George H.W. Bush and the USS Mason plan to request permission to anchor in the Makham Bay area, about 1.6 nautical miles offshore.

Phuket Governor Chotinarin Kerdsom met U.S. Deputy Force Protection Attaché Lou Pham and representatives of the U.S. Embassy’s Force Protection Detachment on October 2 to review preparations. Provincial authorities, police, the Third Naval Area Command, marine officials, and other agencies will operate under a single command system, supported by a 24-hour operations center throughout the visit.

Security operations will use the Phuket Eye intelligent surveillance system and an island-wide network of CCTV cameras. Artificial intelligence will help authorities monitor key locations and detect unusual activity, while designated coordinators will manage communication among agencies responsible for security, public safety, and other services.

Governor Chotinarin also called on visiting U.S. personnel to comply with Thai laws and regulations and respect local customs, traditions, and culture. Phuket will provide security and assistance during the visit, while the U.S. Force Protection Detachment will oversee the safety and appropriate conduct of its personnel.
