Opposition MPs Rukchanok and Sahasawat demand action from new Labor Minister on long-neglected social security issues, including the controversial SKYY9 project.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Opposition MPs Rukchanok Srinork and Sahasawat Khumkhong questioned newly appointed Labor Minister Phongkwan Jirungroongkit over his silence on long-standing issues surrounding Thailand’s Social Security Office (SSO). They demanded clarity on whether the minister intends to follow through on investigations into alleged misconduct and inefficiencies—particularly regarding the SKYY9 building project.

Teerachat Kottrakun, a representative from the Progressive Social Security Team, submitted a petition calling for increased transparency in all SSO meetings and a freeze on questionable procurement processes, especially in high-cost IT and cybersecurity projects worth hundreds of millions of baht.

Rukchanok pointed out that the former Labor Minister, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, had already shown courage by launching an investigation into the SKYY9 project before stepping down. She criticized the current minister for failing to mention the issue or take any visible steps toward reform, even though he’s held office for some time.

Rukchanok said the SSO board appears unwilling to disclose spending details or ensure public funds benefit insured workers. “We’ve done our part as the opposition—presenting issues like SKYY9 and irregularities in procurement. Now it depends on the government’s will to act,” she stated. “We’ve handed the ball over nicely. It’s time for the minister to take the shot.”

Sahasawat echoed these concerns, noting that Minister Phongkwan has made no public comment about social security despite it being his core responsibility. He added that the Cabinet reshuffle seemed aimed more at preserving political stability than appointing qualified individuals. Sahasawat questioned the new minister’s competence and grasp of labor issues.

He also revealed that the matter has been referred to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), which has requested additional documentation. He now seeks a clear statement from both the Labour Minister and the acting Prime Minister on their policy direction for social security, foreign labor deployment, and migrant registration—areas that remain in limbo.

Sahasawat concluded by announcing plans to submit a formal interpellation in Parliament to question the Labour Minister on these and other unresolved issues, expressing hope that the minister will finally show his capabilities and commitment to insured workers. (TNA)
