BANGKOK, Thailand – Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Secretary-General Mathias Cormann has praised Thailand as one of Southeast Asia’s economic success stories, recognizing its economic transformation and improvements in living standards. Speaking at Future-Ready Economy 2026 in Bangkok on October 14, Cormann also expressed support for Thailand’s efforts to join the OECD.
The event was held alongside the 2026 IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings, which Thailand is hosting for the first time in 35 years. Cormann described Bangkok’s selection as a host as recognition of Thailand’s economic progress and Southeast Asia’s growing role in the global economy. He also acknowledged the country’s achievements in expanding economic opportunities and improving living conditions for millions of people.
Cormann welcomed Thailand’s pursuit of OECD membership, noting that its accession would benefit both the country and the organization. Membership would give Thailand a greater role in developing international economic standards, while allowing the OECD to incorporate Thai perspectives and experiences into global policy discussions.
Secretary-General to the Prime Minister Traisuree Taisaranakul welcomed the remarks as recognition of Thailand’s achievements and economic potential. She said OECD membership would allow Thailand to move beyond adopting international standards to helping shape them, expanding its participation in international economic cooperation.
