LUANG PRABANG, Lao PDR – Nan Province of Thailand and Luang Prabang Province of Lao PDR have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish Friendship City relations and enhance cooperation in cultural heritage conservation, tourism, and sustainable development. The agreement was signed on October 2, 2026, in Luang Prabang by Nan Governor Chainarong Wongyai and Luang Prabang Governor Bounlua Sinxayvolavong, highlighting the provinces’ shared historical and cultural heritage.

The partnership emphasizes knowledge exchange in historic town conservation and development, leveraging Luang Prabang’s UNESCO World Heritage experience to support Nan’s pursuit of future World Heritage status. Cooperation will include preserving historical monuments, traditional architecture, urban landscapes, and encouraging community participation, while aligning Nan’s development with international conservation standards.

Both provinces will promote cultural and creative tourism by linking historical and cultural sites, developing joint tourism routes, and sharing tourism management expertise. These initiatives aim to expand tourism markets and create opportunities for local businesses, hotels, restaurants, service providers, and community products in Nan. The agreement also supports exchanges in arts, traditions, and local knowledge, strengthening cultural ties between the Lanna and Lan Xang civilizations through joint activities and personnel exchanges.

Both sides will coordinate through relevant agencies, develop joint action plans, and conduct regular reviews to ensure continuity and effective outcomes. The partnership seeks to preserve shared cultural heritage while strengthening tourism, local economies, and sustainable development. (NNT)
