Minister pays respect to 1973 uprising victims

BANGKOK – The Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office paid his respects to the victims of the 14 October 1973 uprising today, on the 42nd anniversary of the historic event.

ML Panadda Diskul represented the Prime Minister and laid a wreath at the 14 October 1973 uprising memorial monument on Ratchadamnoen Avenue, and gave remarks in memory of the event.

He said the 1973 uprising by students represented their will and power in cherishing democracy, and that they longed for the country to have freedom through their bravery and sacrifice. He mentioned that they also believed that the Thai public should uphold democratic values, which include unity, sufficiency, while discouraging defamation and corruption.

The ceremony, which featured multi-faith services, and speeches by a senior politician and a political scientist, was held at Thammasat University in Bangkok. Some relatives of the uprising’s victims also gathered to urge the government to expedite compensation payments to the victims’ families.
