BANGKOK, Thailand – The “Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2026” officially began on April 11, 2026, at Benjakitti Park, showcasing a grand blend of contemporary Thai charm to establish Thailand as a premier global festival destination.
Minister of Tourism and Sports Surasak Phancharoenworakul presided over the opening ceremony, accompanied by Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Tourist Police Bureau Commissioner Pol. Lt. Gen. Saksira Pueak-am, Bangkok Deputy Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon, and Miss World 2025 Opal Suchata Chuangsri, who serves as Thailand’s Tourism Ambassador and the 2026 Songkran Goddess.
The festival, held from April 11 to 15, offers a diverse range of cultural activities, entertainment, and designated water-play zones designed to modernize the Songkran experience for all ages while honoring its UNESCO World Heritage status.
The five-day event opened with the “Maha Songkran World Event” parade at 6:30 p.m., led by Opal Suchata. Each day features concerts with a rotating lineup of renowned Thai artists. The main stage also presents cultural showcases and a highlight drone light show with over 1,200 drones lighting up the night sky.
The festival grounds feature specialized zones, including the “Songkran in 5 Regions” area, which offers regional performances, DIY workshops, and local products from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Visitors can enjoy a traditional temple fair atmosphere with sand pagoda building, a haunted house, a Ferris wheel, and water-pouring rituals for blessings. The venue is inclusive, with dedicated areas for seniors and children, over 100 food and product stalls, and an EDM stage with popular DJs from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The TAT expressed confidence that the Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2026 will strengthen Songkran’s reputation as a world-class event. By presenting a modern and accessible image, the government aims to position Thailand as a top-tier “Festival Destination” on the international stage. (NNT)
