The Malaysian-led Interim Observer Team visited Ubon Ratchathani’s Nam Yuen District to assess border security after over 200 landmines were reportedly planted between June and September.

UBON RATCHATHANI, Thailand – The Interim Observer Team (IOT), led by the Malaysian Assistant Defense Attaché to Thailand, conducted an inspection of the Suranaree Task Force under the 2nd Army Area Command along the Thai–Cambodian border between October 4 and 5. The visit aimed to assess the border security situation following reports of illegal landmine planting in the area.

During the mission, the delegation attended a border situation briefing at Fort Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital before traveling to the Chong Bok border area in Nam Yuen District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. The site is known for previous incidents involving illegal landmine placement, particularly near the blackboard tree, where PMN-2 anti-personnel mines were found.

According to reports from local military units, more than 200 PMN-2 landmines were illegally planted between June and September 2025, in 36 separate incidents. These acts have resulted in injuries to three Thai soldiers, including one who suffered a severe leg amputation. The Thai side formally raised the issue during the inspection, stressing the seriousness of cross-border security threats and the need for continued monitoring.

The IOT’s field visit marked an important step in validating the situation and collecting verified information from border units. The mission is expected to contribute to stronger international cooperation and promote a peaceful, sustainable approach to resolving security issues between Thailand and Cambodia.

The 2nd Army Area Command also reaffirmed its commitment to vigilance, discipline, and the protection of national sovereignty. It emphasized that the Thai armed forces will continue to maintain stability and ensure the safety of communities along the border, enabling local residents to live in peace and security. (NNT)
