BANGKOK, 6 August 2012 – Several provinces throughout Thailand are prepared to launch the “800 million saplings for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s 80th birthday reforestation project”.

The government is gearing up for the launch of the reforestation project at 8 am on August 8th, along with many provinces throughout the country. The project is aimed at honoring Her Majesty the Queen on the occasion of her 80th birthday anniversary on August 12th this year.

Under the reforestation project, 800 million saplings will be planted during a period of five years; from 2012 to 2016. In 2012 alone, 20 million saplings will be planted in river basin areas. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will preside over the reforestation ceremony in Chiang Mai province, while four deputy prime ministers will preside over the ceremonies in four other regions of the country. The project is meant to show gratitude to Her Majesty the Queen, whose role in reforestation and tree planting campaigns has been well-recognized by all. Her idea is to enable humans and forests to harmoniously live together without destruction.

The trees to be planted include hairy-leaved Apitong, Siamese Rosewood, Iron Wood and Makamong.
