Government prepared to declare safety zones in southern border region

Bangkok – The government is preparing to declare safety zones in Thailand’s southern border region.

Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha said he is hoping the government will be able to declare safety zones in the three southern border provinces before the end of this month.

Gen. Prayut said that the first such zone is set to be in Cho-airong District of Narathiwat Province.

In addition, he said that the peace talks plan between the government and groups with different views is expected to progress, which will help build trust among all while showing the government’s sincerity to opposing groups.

The Prime Minister went on to say that, if the government’s sincere attention to promote peace is well-received, there should be a decline in acts to instigate violence in the conflict-torn area, while more cooperation should be achieved from all sides to bring the situation there back to normal.
