BANGKOK, 20 March 2015 – Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said unrest in Thailand’s three southernmost provinces has substantially declined.

Gen Prawit said the number of violent incidents in the region is down 50% when compared to the same period of 2014.

In addition, the government’s security agencies are working on preparations for peace talks with militant groups in the deep South. To bring about sustainable peace and order, the government has to make sure that the counterparts who will take part in future negotiations have actual power and influence in the region, he said.

Between January 2014 and March 2015, about 6,000 people have been killed and about 10,000 others injured in the insurgency, mainly in Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala.
