Bangkok – Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, who is also Minister of Defense, chaired a wreath-laying ceremony in central Bangkok last Sunday to acknowledge this year’s Veterans Day and commemorate the foundation day of the War Veterans Organization of Thailand. The official remembrance ceremony took place at Victory Monument.

The ceremony was attended by military officers, military diplomats, and representatives of the War Veterans Organization of Thailand.

Victory Monument was erected in 1941 to celebrate the victory of Thailand in the Franco-Thai War. The war was a brief conflict waged against the French colonial authorities in Indo-China.

The red poppy is a symbolic flower in Thailand, as well as in other countries. It’s the symbol of peace that reminds all of the many people who died in different fights for freedom. Red symbolizes the blood shed in conflicts.

Red poppies are sold on Veterans’ Day as a commemorative fund-raising initiative of the War Veterans Organization. The money from the sale of poppies is given to the veterans and their families.
