BANGKOK, 20 December 2013 The Election Commission has prepared a contingency plan to ensure smooth operations on the general election date on February 2.

According to EC Commissioner Puchong Nutrawong, the agency has set up 10 back-up venues for candidacy registration following reports that the anti-government People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) will march towards and possibly seize the site next week.

The EC has set Monday to Friday next week for the registration of candidates in the party-list system and December 28-January 1 for candidates running in constituencies. The Thai-Japanese stadium in the Din Daeng area chosen as Monday’s venue is believed to be one possible target for the rally.

The commission has also planned to tighten security measures including weapon screening at the venue.

Reports suggest that the PDRC is staging rallies in a bid to sabotage the upcoming general election.
