Deputy PM Phumtham: “Our Prime Minister is wealthy enough—there’s no need to touch public funds for travel.”

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai defended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra against online criticism alleging she used public funds for personal foreign travel.

Phumtham stated that the Prime Minister, possessing vast personal wealth, has no need to misuse state funds for travel purposes. He emphasized that many of her international trips are funded privately. He also urged those creating “drama” on social media to act responsibly and not spread damaging misinformation.

“In many cases, the Prime Minister pays from her own pocket. Claims that she goes abroad using state funds are baseless,” said Phumtham. “Not all diplomatic activities can be disclosed, as some meetings are confidential or informal. When details can be shared, we will do so transparently.”

He cited examples, such as ongoing U.S.-Thailand tax negotiations that may appear stagnant but are progressing behind closed doors. The deputy PM stressed the importance of discretion in diplomacy and warned against fueling public division with baseless accusations.

Regarding a recent social media post showing Paetongtarn alongside former PM Yingluck Shinawatra, Phumtham dismissed speculation of an in-person meeting. “Why would she need to visit Yingluck in person? I myself publicly expressed support for Yingluck regarding the rice subsidy case. It’s about empathy,” he added.

Phumtham concluded by calling for greater understanding of how sensitive governance issues often require privacy, and warned against unnecessary drama in a society already facing numerous challenges. (TNA)
