Minister Phumtham says no confirmation yet on bomb functionality or suspect’s confession; warns against speculation as probe continues.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Ministry of Defense has urged caution regarding reports of a bomb plot in Phuket, stating that forensic results are still pending and a confession is unconfirmed.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has commented on the investigation into a suspicious motorcycle found at Phuket Airport. He stated that components from the vehicle are currently being examined by the Office of Police Forensic Science. The minister stressed that it is not yet officially known if the device was a functional bomb and that media reports suggesting so are currently speculation.

Regarding news that a suspect has confessed to planning to bomb three locations, Minister Phumtham said there is no written confirmation of this confession and the individual remains under investigation.

He also dismissed suggestions that criminals are exploiting the current focus of security forces on the Cambodian border. The Defense Minister explained that security agencies are deployed to cover the entire country, with specific units assigned to the border while others maintain security elsewhere. (NNT)
