Defense Minister Lt Gen Adul Boonthumjaroen and Fourth Army officials in Pattani issued a public apology over a communication error involving Ponoh Islamic schools, while also providing updates on the Narathiwat MP attack investigation.

PATTANI, Thailand – The defense leadership has issued a public apology following controversy over remarks related to Ponoh Islamic schools in the southern border provinces, seeking to ease tensions and maintain stability in the region.

Defense Minister Lt Gen Adul Boonthumjaroen, alongside Fourth Army Area Commander Lt Gen Norathip Poinok and senior police officials, addressed the issue after a security meeting in Pattani. Lt Gen Adul said the situation arose from a communication lapse during a press briefing, where pressure and a large media presence contributed to misunderstanding.

The controversy involved comments by the Fourth Army commander during a moment when the microphone was muted, which later drew criticism. Adul said the remarks did not represent official policy and described the incident as a communication error that had already been acknowledged, with an apology issued. He said the matter can be resolved through dialogue and public understanding.

Lt Gen Norathip also apologized, acknowledging that his remarks may have caused concern, especially among religious education institutions. He said he will continue engaging with local communities and schools to maintain trust and support ongoing efforts to address issues in the southern provinces.

Officials also provided an update on the attempted killing of a member of parliament in Narathiwat, reporting several arrests and ongoing efforts to locate remaining suspects. Authorities are coordinating across agencies, including border units and international channels, as the investigation proceeds under close supervision from senior officials. (NNT)
