BANGKOK, Thailand – Great news for Thailand! Chiang Mai has been named the No.1 Best City in Asia for 2025 by Travel + Leisure, while Bangkok closely follows in 3rd place.
Travel + Leisure, a leading travel and lifestyle publication in Asia, announced the results of its World’s Best Awards 2025: Cities in Asia, based on responses from nearly 180,000 travelers.
According to the survey, Chiang Mai, Thailand secured the top spot with a score of 91.94, followed by Tokyo, Japan in second with 91.39, and Bangkok, Thailand in third with 91.34.
The website highlighted the reasons why Chiang Mai earned the No.1 title: the friendliness of its people, exceptional food, lively night markets, and flavorful street eats—especially local favorites like mango sticky rice and khao soi (curry noodles).
Chiang Mai also offers rich cultural experiences and scenic attractions, such as Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, perched on a mountain with panoramic views of the city—considered a cultural icon of the region.
Nature also plays a big role in attracting visitors to Chiang Mai. Surrounded by lush mountains and home to beautiful national parks, the city is a haven for nature lovers.
Chiang Mai is also known for its elephant sanctuaries, which are easily accessible to tourists. One traveler remarked, “Chiang Mai is an amazing place to watch elephants, feed them, and even bathe with them.” Elephants have become one of the city’s most beloved draws for international tourists.
