CHANTHABURI – Villagers in three districts of Chanthaburi Province have submitted a petition to the prime minister, asking the government to build a reservoir to solve drought problems.

Representatives of 45 villages in the districts of Khao Khitchakhut, Kaeng Hang Maeo and Khlung gathered at city hall to submit the petition via the office of the provincial governor. They said residents in the three districts were badly affected, as the drought crisis had extensively damaged their farming areas.

They believe the reservoir will be able to store more water for consumption and agriculture, ensure water for wildlife, prevent natural disasters and lessen the likelihood of encounters between humans and wild elephants.

The villagers asked the government to speed up the plan to build a reservoir in Khlung District. The project has faced a delay as the construction site is close to Plew Waterfall National Park. The National Parks Board is still considering removing the site from the park zone.
