BANGKOK, Thailand – Cambodian workers have been returning to Thailand through natural border routes after being misled about job opportunities in Cambodia. The Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Labor have granted a six-month extension allowing these workers to remain in Thailand without crossing the border to renew permits, citing humanitarian reasons.
Government spokesman Jirayu Huangsap said security agencies reported a surge in Cambodian workers entering Thailand illegally in several areas. The Border Protection Command in Chanthaburi and Trat provinces, working with immigration authorities, detected large numbers of workers using informal routes.
Previously, the Cambodian government encouraged its citizens working in Thailand to return home, promising employment and income. However, many found the conditions were not as promised and sought to return to Thailand to continue working.
The Royal Gazette recently published announcements from the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Labor allowing Cambodian workers whose work permits or residence authorizations have expired in border areas to continue working legally in Thailand for six months starting June 7, 2025. This measure aims to uphold humanitarian standards while ensuring legal work.
Spokesman Jirayu emphasized that while Thailand is granting legal extensions for humanitarian reasons, national security remains a top priority. The government continues to enforce laws while providing necessary assistance for Cambodian workers to live and work safely in Thailand. (TNA)
