BANGKOK, 5 April 2013  The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has affirmed that the capital’s express boats are required to operate within a speed limit, after online reports suggest that canal passengers’ safety was recently threatened by the racing of two express boats.

A recently released viral CCTV footage has raised concerns about the safety of Bangkok’s canal passengers. The clip shows passengers being hit by high waves as a result of the racing between two express boats on the Saen Saeb Canal.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Amorn Kijchawengkul said all boat operators have to comply with the speed limit of 20 kilometers per hour set by the Marine Department, assuring the public that passenger safety is their first priority.

He elaborated that the BMA signed an insurance contract with Thai Pattana Insurance Company Limited, which would be obliged to pay financial compensation to commuters in case of an accident.
