BANGKOK, Thailand – The Ministry of Transport plans to open the M6 Bang Pa-in–Nakhon Ratchasima Motorway for daily use beginning December 25, 2026, offering motorists an alternative route to northeastern Thailand. Currently open only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the motorway is expected to ease congestion and improve travel between Bangkok, the Central Region, and the Northeast.
Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced the plan while outlining broader improvements to the country’s road network. The ministry is also preparing long-term measures to ease traffic congestion on routes to southern Thailand, including alternative roads intended to reduce pressure on Rama II Road.
In 2027, the ministry plans to expand the Phetkasem Road parallel-route project from Nakhon Pathom toward Pak Tho, passing through Kaeng Krachan before connecting with Pran Buri district. Officials are also considering widening Phetkasem Road between Pran Buri and Chumphon from four to eight lanes to improve traffic flow. The proposed widening remains under discussion, with no construction timetable announced.
The ministry is also planning a 21-kilometer extension of the M5 motorway from the Din Daeng–Don Mueang corridor to the Bang Pa-in Interchange, with procurement expected in 2028. Construction and completion dates remain unconfirmed. (NNT)
