BANGKOK, Thailand – In a recent social media post, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who currently holds the ASEAN chairmanship, shared a photo of his meeting with former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his delegation. The meeting, which took place in Bangkok, was centered on discussions about fostering peace in Myanmar and providing sustainable humanitarian assistance to its people.

The informal gathering, which occurred the previous evening, was a platform for exchanging views on various regional issues, with a particular focus on the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. Anwar expressed the significance of the discussions, which also featured ideas for long-term peace efforts aimed at ensuring that humanitarian aid can be delivered to those in need in Myanmar.

“Last evening in Bangkok, I had the opportunity to meet with the informal advisory team of the ASEAN Chair, with Thaksin Shinawatra as its leader. Our wide-ranging discussions allowed us to exchange thoughts on various regional matters, including proposing ideas for a sustainable peace process in Myanmar. This is crucial in ensuring that humanitarian assistance reaches the people of Myanmar consistently and sustainably,” Anwar posted on Facebook.

The discussion explored ideas for a sustainable peace process and ensuring humanitarian assistance reaches those in need.

The following morning, Anwar also held a 40-minute virtual meeting with Uman Win Khae from Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG), a key group opposing Myanmar’s military junta. Their discussion focused on the immediate humanitarian needs of the Myanmar population, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that aid reaches those who need it most.

The talks also touched on the broader need for ongoing dialogue between all involved parties. Anwar reiterated his openness to meeting with the NUG in Malaysia at a future time, echoing his previous meetings with Myanmar’s State Administration Council. The virtual meeting, according to Anwar, was constructive, with no objections raised by any side regarding the participation of ASEAN in these discussions.

“Building trust remains vital. It is crucial for ASEAN to continue its efforts. We will continue to work with all parties to support peace, reconciliation, and the well-being of the people of Myanmar,” Anwar concluded.

ASEAN’s role in mediating peace and fostering dialogue in Myanmar continues to be a central focus, and Anwar’s efforts represent an important step in promoting stability in the region. (TNA)
