BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul delivered an address at the opening plenary session of the 2026 IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings, reflecting on Thailand’s historical role as a bridge between regions and calling for closer international cooperation. The premier recalled how Thailand’s ancient capital once served as a thriving center of commerce connecting East and West. He also referred to Bangkok’s hosting of the meetings in 1991, during a period of rapid global progress, and expressed pride in welcoming the international community back 35 years later.
Addressing delegates, Anutin observed that the global landscape has changed dramatically since 1991. Artificial intelligence is transforming daily life, while shifting geopolitical dynamics are reshaping international trade and investment. He also identified climate change as one of the era’s defining challenges, stressing the need for coordinated international action to address these interconnected issues.
The prime minister stressed that economic resilience depends on trusted relationships and partnerships that allow countries to learn from one another. Anutin described the spirit of cooperation established through previous international gatherings as an enduring legacy and encouraged delegates to consider what Bangkok 2026 should leave behind. For Thailand, he envisioned a role as a hub connecting regions, capital, technology, and human talent.
Anutin noted that these connections should help develop practical skills, create economic opportunities, and enable broader participation across society. He expressed confidence that decisions made during the Bangkok meetings could help build more resilient economies and expand opportunities worldwide. The Thai prime minister concluded by expressing hope that delegates would return to Bangkok for another gathering in 35 years. (NNT)
