Bangkok (AP) – Four tourists from Mexico on a family vacation have died in a traffic accident in Thailand.

Police in Phichit province said all 10 people traveling in a van to the northern province of Sukothai on Thursday, Jan. 14 night were Mexican. Two females died at the scene when the vehicle crashed into a tree and two males died later at a hospital in Phichit, about 315 kilometers (215 miles) north of Bangkok. The six other people in the rented van were injured, said police Capt. Patiwat Sontirod.

Patiwat said the van was so badly damaged that special rescue tools had to be used to pry open its door to get the passengers out. He said the Mexican ambassador arrived at the hospital Friday to make arrangement for the dead and the survivors.

Thailand, which hosted 29 million foreign visitors last year, has one of the highest traffic fatality rates in the world.
