PHETCHABURI, 7 June 2013 2 local hunters have been arrested for the killing of a pregnant female elephant found in Kaeng Krachan national park in Phetchaburi.

Sanya Thuamsap (37) and Wiraphong Thuamsap (25), who were brothers, are suspected of being responsible for the carcass of the pregnant elephant found near Krarang 3 reservoir in the national park in March. The men were apprehended at their home in Huay Sat Yai sub-district, Kaeng Krachan district, just 3 kilometers from where the dead elephant was found.

The accused denied the charges.

Phetchaburi police said the dead elephants found at Kaeng Krachan in March and April were the doings of several groups of local hunters. According to them, the killings were likely prompted by locals’ annoyance with the elephants’ ravaging of their farmlands and not related to the global ivory trade.
