IPGC Pattaya Golf Society

The Pattaya Golf Society visited Treasure Hill on Monday, 24th October to play a stableford competition on a course that was in customer-friendly mode, with fairways offering some run and greens running at a decent pace.  The only problem was the wind – or lack of it – which made for uncomfortably sticky conditions.

The four groups found an empty course ahead of them and good progress was made throughout.  There were two birdie ‘2’s, with karl Flood making a birdie on the second and Wayne Peppernell matching the feat on the seventeenth.

In the competition proper Aussie Ron Matthews made third place his own again with a decent 32-point card but he found himself fully six points behind the joint winners of the day, Irishman Karl Flood and the other Celt in the field, Mr Len.  Indeed, the latter had enjoyed three successive wins for the first time in almost twenty years of regular golf in Pattaya.  And at Treasure Hill!

Butler lords it

Medal is a tough format for the majority of golfers and the PGS monthly medal at Bangpra, albeit in beautiful condition, took place on Wednesday, 26th October in very humid and wind-free conditions.  The rain gods considered intervening but decided to drench Pattaya instead and only one hole was affected.  Thus the competition took place and in tough conditions the tough got going.

In third place with net 77 was Englishman Peter Wilson, one shot behind the Danish host of the Links Bar, Christian Boysen with net 76, the best gross of the day being 83.  The winner was one of the earliest PGS members, Ban Chang based Englishman Paul Butler and his winning round of net 75 was a throwback to the halcyon days of the group when Paul graced the field on a regular basis with his own individual brand of “get-out-of-jail” golf.

The only birdie ‘2’ of the day came on the second hole via the skill of Danish golfer Orlan Marten.

Mason the master

The excellent course at Pattana enjoyed the pleasure of the company of the PGS on Friday, 29th October when the group called to play a stableford competition on the C and A nines, which were in good order but with greens a little slower than normal.

Play was from the yellow tees and the track was still almost 6,500 yards long on a day when humidity was high and fairways soft.

Results saw a tight contest with Karl Flood and Ron Matthews sharing third with 32 points.  One point ahead was Aussie Wayne Peppernell and his 33 points was a solid enough round of golf.  The winner was the newly returned John Mason and he again pulled out a plum in an early round with his score of 36 points.  He will remind you that he netted forty-five points after his return in mid March at Pleasant Valley – if you ask him!

The only birdie ‘2’ was recorded by Ray Cody on A3 but after the presentation those golfers present in The Links were all treated to a beer courtesy of Paul Butler’s winning pot at Bangpra two days previously.
