Players arrived nice and early for the trip through the pineapples to the beautiful Pattavia Century Golf Course.  After one no-show we were an even dozen, and reshuffled into three 4-balls.

Whenever somebody is heading for Pattavia the first time, the advice is always keep your ball under the pin as downhill putts here can cause grief.  What a surprise to find these greens had been cored and sanded and were the slowest we have experienced.

Apart from the surprising greens, this course is in excellent condition and check in and the starter were very efficient.

There were big scores were aplenty today and biggest of them all came from Selwyn Yates with a massive 48 points off his handicap of 15.  On the front nine he amassed 27 but could “only” manage a mere 21 on the back nine.  Great score Selwyn.

In the locker room I asked Mike Firkin his score.  He said he was a little bit embarrassed by his 43 points.  At that point I thought it was in the bag for him.  How can you have 43 pts and finish second?

Alan Walker and Mark Bamber both had 37 and this would win on just about any other day.  Alan won the count back to take third place.

Wednesday, June 28, Pleasant Valley – Stableford

A Flight

1st Mike Allidi (3) 38pts

2nd John Edwards (14) 38pts

B Flight

1st John Anderson (29) 37pts

2nd Len Jones (28) 35pts

This course appears to be undergoing some major renovations, on the fairways as well as the greens.  The work is being done in a way as not to inconvenience players, so it should be a nice enhancement when finished.  Delighted to find the showers have also been upgraded.  There is one complaint, however – the bunkers are way below standard and it looked like many had been used as a playpen for dogs.

Two flights today with 2 places in each and the A flight developed into a 3-way tussle on 38 points, with Mike Allidi (73 gross) winning a close count-back to take top spot ahead of John Edwards in second while Bob Watson just missed out.

B flight was more clean cut, with John Anderson amassing 37 points to edge out Len Jones with 35.

Amongst the non-winners, the best front nine score came from Mike Firkin with 21 while Dave Hewson led on the back nine with 20.

Friday, June 30, Burapha – Stableford

A Flight

1st Selwyn Yates (11) 35pts

2nd Toby Glass (12) 35pts

3rd Phil Davies (12) 34pts

B Flight

1st Mick Coghlan (20) 34pts

2nd Alan Walker (23) 33pts

3rd Mike Firkin (23) 33pts

On a slightly overcast morning 19 golfers set out for the short trip to Burapha ready to tackle the A & B courses.  What can we say about this course not already said?  Fairways are firm and cut to allow some run and the greens were quite quick and ran true.

The scores overall for this round were very modest and Selwyn Yates and Toby Glass each set the best points score at 35 and only a close count-back could separate them, with Selwyn getting the nod.  Phil Davies is never far from the action and placed third in A flight with 34 points.

In an irregular appearance at the Links, Mick Coghlan managed to take top spot in B flight with just 34 points. But, hey, on this day, it was better than the rest of the flight.  Second place went to a count-back with Alan Walker edging out Mike Firkin by way of a better back nine, both scoring 33 points.

The best front nine for non-winners came from Colin Smith with a whopping 23 points and the star of the inward nine was Stuart Thompson with 19.
