IPGC Golf from The Haven

Monday, March 27, Greenwood A & B – Stableford

CSS 72

1st Larry Gibb (21) 36pts

2nd Markku Tynell (22) 34pts

3rd Mark Cooper (11) 33pts

4th Paul Hubbard (12) 33pts

5th Hal Hart (19) 32pts

6th Andrew Purdie (6) 31pts

The day began at dawn with driving rain which continued throughout the early morning, but still an intrepid group left The Haven to travel up the 331 to Greenwood in the hope that the weather would improve.  On arrival at the course the rain remained heavy for half an hour , lessened enough for the players to make a start and then persisted until most of them had reached the seventh tee.  In the circumstances the scoring was very good, with the CSS remaining at the standard 72.

Larry Gibb took the win with a steady level handicap round with a 17/19 split.  Markku Tynell placed second another two points behind and one ahead of a count back for third, which Mark Cooper won with a better 15 to 14 to leave Paul Hubbard in fourth.  Hal Hart slipped into fifth place another one back, with Andrew Purdie securing the last place on the podium also one behind him.

There were no 2s in either of the divisions.

Wednesday, March 29, Khao Kheow B & C – Stableford

CSS 71

1st Andrew Purdie (6) 39pts

2nd Rod Crosswell (17) 36pts

3rd Mark Cooper (11) 35pts

4th Yukio Kikuchi (19) 33pts

5th Dave LeHane (16) 31pts

6th John Carlin (17) 29pts

The day looked much brighter early on and the group set off for the fortnightly visit to Khao Kheow, hopeful that it would remain that way.  Unfortunately the darkening skies opened as the field were playing the third, fourth and fifth holes and play was stopped for an hour with all the players sheltering in the drink stop on the third.  Most of the players recorded zero points or at the most a couple on those three holes and so it was surprising that the overall scoring was good enough to see the CSS for the day reduce to 71.

Andrew Purdie had an excellent day, returning a three-under handicap card that was made by an 18/21 split and good enough to win by three from Rod Crosswell, who returned two level 18-point nines.

Mark Cooper had a steady round to take third place just in front of Yukio Kikuchi in fourth, with Dave LeHane taking fifth and John Carlin sixth.

Once again there were no 2s in the first division but Terry Hodgkiss was spotted smiling after he cleaned out the bulging roll over pot in the second division.

Friday, March 31, The Emerald – Stableford

CSS 72

1st Yukio Kikuchi (19) 37pts

2nd Banjo Bannister (13) 36pts

3rd Mark Cooper (11) 36pts

4th Andrew Purdie (6) 34pts

5th Peter Skinner (9) 31pts

6th Markku Tynell (22) 31pts

Closing off a very wet week, the forecast was for more rain but again the group set off with high hopes under clear skies and on this occasion they were rewarded with a totally dry day, although there were rumbles of thunder throughout most of the rounds.

‘Lift and place’ was in play again for the third time in the week but this time to allow for the crab grass in the fairways and apart from that the course was in good condition considering the recent weather in the area.

Yukio Kikuchi played very steadily to take the top spot on the podium, just one ahead of a count back for second place which Banjo Bannister won with a better 20 to 17 to leave Mark Cooper on the third step.

Andrew Purdie took fourth just in front of another count back for fifth, which Peter Skinner won after returning a better 16 to 15, leaving Markku Tynell in sixth place.

Markku had the solo 2 in the second division pool whilst Andrew Purdie, Yasuo Suzuki and Paul Hird shared the first division pot.
