The Tropical Golf Group

Tuesday, Sept. 26, Pattana – Stableford

The test for this day was to be the B and C nines at Pattana and the first shot was to be on the B1, not the easiest around.  With water left and right and in front of the green this can be a monster hole.  You are certain to hit water sometimes and for a first shot this is really intimidating. So off we went.

We moved around at a good pace and despite the fact the parking place was packed we found no hold ups.  Back early at BJ’s in Pattaya it was soon into the results.  The winner with a fine 38 points was Andre Van Dyk ahead of John Pierrel with 37 in second.  Taking third spot was Brian Parish with 36 points and for fourth we had a count back on 35 points that saw Derek Brook edge Bob Britton in fifth.

The best front-nine for non-podium finishers came from Nigel Perry with 19 points and the best back-nine from John Anderson, also with 19.

Friday, Sept. 29, Greenwood – Medal

Today was a daily double day at Tropical Golf, with both the Monthly Mug and Golfer of the Month awards up for grabs.  Greenwood is a good test for stroke play, being a bit long from the white tees but relatively wide fairways.  Oh, and bunkers!  Lots and lots of bunkers.  Golfer of the Month contenders Brian Parish and John Pierrel were in the first group together, and the race was on!

This month’s mug winner was Gordon Clegg (c/h 35) who bested the competition with five shots to spare with his net 68.  Moving on down the line was Bob Britton (17) with net 73, John Davis (15) with net 74, John Pierrel (14) at net 75, and Tom Herrington winning last call with net 76 on count-back thanks to a good back-nine.

The battle between Brian and John was close for the first few holes.  We don’t know if Greenwood management has a count of how many sand traps are on the course, but they could ask Brian as he decided to visit nearly every one.  Some days are like that.  While Brian was raking numerous bunkers, John played good steady golf to take home his first Golfer of the Month award.
