Preparations for this weekend’s King’s Cup Asia-Pattaya Marathon are already in full swing and thousands of athletes and supporters are expected to descend on the city over the next few days in the build up to Sunday’s race.

The event, which takes place on the morning of Sunday, July 17, features five race categories including Marathon (42.195km), Wheelchair Marathon (42.195km), Half Marathon (21.10km), Quarter Marathon (10.55km) and Student Marathon (3.55km).  The races will start and finish at Central Festival Pattaya Beach shopping mall and prizes will be awarded in each category according to the different age of athletes.

Once again there is expected to be a large contingent of African runners taking part but could this be the year for another nation to finally break the Kenyan dominance of the event?

The racing is expected to get underway approx. 4 a.m. Sunday morning and the runners will follow the routes shown on the map above.  It is expected that there will be traffic hold-ups on Sunday morning as the roads around the city will be at least partially closed by police until the back markers have made their way back to the finish line.

Anyone interested in taking part in the 2011 Pattaya Marathon can apply at Pattaya City Hall during normal office hours of register at the official marathon website: www.pattaya-marathon.net.  Late registration can also be made along Pattaya Beach Road near the start/finish point one day before the race.
