Today was the final day of the Open with the main contenders going off last.  Dave Palmer was the man of the match and top in A Flight with a net 63 and he was followed in by Michel Deletraz with a net 70.  Three players were locked on net 73 but Paul Smith emerged from the pile-up to fill the third podium place at the expense of Connie Walsh and tournament favourite Dave Stockman.

In B Flight, Lou ‘Zigzag’ took the tournament by the scruff of the neck with a net 64 to be crowned Lewiinski’s champion 2015.  Lou did what most consider impossible as he shot sub- par for the fourth time in a row off a 22 handicap.  Adam Barton filled the silver spot with a solid net 70 as The Donkey took the bronze with a even par round.

The results for the Open were Lou in first with a combined 271, Adam Barton second on 282 and Dave Stockman third.

In the B Flight Plate, Peter Terry shot the best score on the day to record 39 points and was two clear of Tom Callahan, but sadly Tom is not a member so Sayer Gill on an even par round took the silver.  Hans Moerk and David Foulk were tied on 33 points with the scales of justice tipping in Hans’ favour.

Welshman Phil Davies was the top man in the A Flight Plate as his 35 points were better distributed than that of Scotland’s Buckie boot boy Sugar Robinson.  Sugar’s Scotch mate, Reg McKay, filled the bronze spot as he outpointed Lawrie McBride, both a stroke adrift.

Paul Smith a brace, Dave Palmer and Peter LeNoury sheared the 2’s pot.

The Plate winner with a two day total of 75 points was Terry Peters, runner up was Hans Moerk with 70 points and second runner up was Garry Blackburn.

Back at Lewiinski’s it was party time a great day was had by all and special thanks to the kitchen staff for the marvelous buffet.

Monday, March 2, Khao Kheow C & B – Stableford

A Flight

1st Matt Cronin (17) 37pts

2nd Nick Thomas (12) 36pts

3rd Connie Walsh (13) 27pts

B Flight

1st Andre Fortis (17) 32pts

2nd Brian cooper (24) 31pts

3rd Joe Tynan (25) 29pts

Non-member Luke Glyn led the field over the testing C & D courses at the beautifully presented Khao Kheow layout and he was also the only player to better his handicap.  The top spot reverted  to Irishman Matt Cronin with a even par score and Pat Dunne and Phil Page would have filled the silver and bronze spots had they also been members, but they weren’t, so the minor flight places went to Nick Thomas and Connie Walsh.

B Flight found the conditions and the course a handful as they struggled round the course.  Andre Fortis filled the top podium position with 32 points while Brian Cooper and ‘Smoking’ Joe Tynan were strung out in one shot increments and in that order.

Ian Pickles sunk the only 2 of the day.

C Flight

2nd Martin Allard (24) 36pts

The day was in honour of Phil Davies’ 57th birthday and he kindly donated several additional prizes.

Every golf golf bar in Pattaya is filled with stories of hard luck and “what ifs”.  That is as much a part of the game as playing.  But I dare say that in terms of hard luck it would be tough not to offer some consolation to some of the A Flight players this Tuesday.  To set the scene, the venue for the day was David Graham and Gary Parks creation Burapha, although admittedly the two easiest nines – American Wood and British Links.

It is well known that this course can be made quite short if the tees are up and they were on this day.  However, none of that fully explained the performances of five golfers in A Flight, all with well seasoned handicaps and well over one hundred rounds under their collective belts.  So you can imagine confident looks that Dave Palmer and birthday boy Phil Davies exuded as they strode off B9 with 41 and 39 points respectively.  That was until they found they were not even on the podium.  Then came Thierry Petrement with 44 marvelous points – how does third place sound?  Ah the winner, Bob Watson, with 45 points – sorry only second place.  The real winner was JP Maffray with an incredible 46 points.

On any other day, nice guy Peter Terry’s B Flight winning 43 points would have hailed him as a bandit but it felt like even par.  Peter was four clear of Peter Hosfield and Peter Henshaw, with the former edging second on count back.

C Flight was topped by Jim Elphick with a sound 37 points while three players were tied on even par rounds; Martin Allard emerged with the silver with Peter Moon lifting the bronze and Barry Oats just missing out.

Bob Watson (a brace) shared the 2’s pot with six other players.

Back at Lewiinski’s after the presentation the blind pairs draw was won by Bob Watson and JP Maffray.  Colin then thanked the staff and everybody that participated for a wonderful day’s golf and world famous buffet.

Thursday, March 5, Treasure Hill – Stableford

A Flight

1st Walter Baechli (16) 35pts

2nd Bruce Anderson (10) 33pts

B Flight

1st Tom Kelly (18) 33pts

2nd Peter Henshaw (22) 31pts

Treasure Hill must be considered one of the toughest courses in the area and playing the course on a hot and humid day with a slight wind made it very important to strike the ball from the tee with accuracy.

Walter Baechli, showing all his old flair that once made him the scourge of Switzerland, shot a best on the day 35 points and never missed the fairway all day, edging Lawrie McBride by two strokes to take the top spot in A Flight.  He was also the only player to notch a ‘2’.

Visitor Tom Kelly took the top spot in B Flight on 33 points as Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw rounded out the flight

Friday, March 6, Mt. Shadow – Stableford

1st Peter Kelly (11) 34pts

2nd Chris Reed (21) 29pts

A smaller field than expected to play Mountain Shadow, probably due to the so city’s hectic week and the threat of more storms, but for those that made the effort they were rewarded with a beautifully prepared course.

Peter Kelly found the course to his liking as he was the man of the match with 34 points.  Edmond Delap, with 30 points, would have picked up the silver if he had only been a member so that went to a grateful Chris Reed with 29.

No 2’s were recorded so a rollover to Monday.
