PSC Golf from the Tropical Golf Group

Tuesday, August 14, Greenwood – Stableford

1st John Davis (12) 35pts

2nd Frank Xin (31) 35pts

3rd John Pierrel (14) 34pts

4th Brian Parish (13) 32pts

With regulars scattered around Thailand and indeed the world on personal trips, a small but enthusiastic group headed out for Greenwood on Tuesday. The weather looked promising with the chance of some wind and possible rain showers, but nothing severe showing up on the local weather radars.

On arrival we had an easy check-in, including a new special Tuesday “All-In” rate making it especially attractive for those taking carts, and were soon gathered on A-1 to begin our journey around the A & C nines. There seemed to be quite a few golfers at the course however the starter had effectively started other groups off C-1 and we all ended up having clear sailing all the way around.

The course was in excellent condition, good grass under the ball and the greens running smoothly at a reasonable speed. The only problem mentioned was inconsistency of bunkers with some packed and firm and some loose and fluffy, but hey, not suppose to be there anyway and they are called hazards for a reason.

Greenwood is usually a course that players score well on and with the weather fully cooperating this day, how would the Tropical Golfers fair, would they beat the course or would Greenwood A/C come out on top?

Round over and cards collected the group assembled back at BJ’s, all ready to learn the results of the day. John Davis took top spot on countback over Frank Xin, both with 35 points, but overall we had to concede that on this day Greenwood more than held its own.

Friday, August 17, Pattana A & B – Stableford

It had been a month since our last visit to Pattana Sports Club, a venue that has become a group favorite. What is not to like, cheerful greeters welcoming the golfers, a magnificent clubhouse, Sports Day green fee rate, and on this day, a coupon for a free beer or drink in the restaurant! All we needed now was the course to be in good condition and the weather to cooperate.

Assigned to play the par 73 A & B layout we were away a bit early on A-1 and the pace of play was a little slow, but when surrounded by a course in such pristine condition, who minds a bit of a wait. The fairways and greens were in excellent condition, the rough as it should be and the bunkers were fair with the sand having been fluffed a bit.

With the weather cooperating fully, all were soon relaxing in the restaurant with their complimentary beverage while the cards were collected and tallied before heading back to Pattaya and our home base, “The BJ Holiday Lodge”.

Gathered around the tables the day’s results were presented. While last month we had numbers to allow two flights, this day, with several regulars traveling, one flight was all we could muster. The winner of the day, a repeat performance as he won at Pattana last month, was Don Carmody (c/h 28) with a fine 39 points. Following Don on the podium were Brian Parish (12) in second with 37 pts, Gordon Clegg (27) third on 36 and Mick Coghlan (22) and Bob Britton (13), both on 34 points. Excellent scoring on a fantastic golf course!

Accolades went to John Davis, 20 points, and George Bayley, 19 points, for the Best 9 (non winning) scores.
