Monday, May 22, Greenwood – Stableford

1st Stewart Booth (9) 35pts

2nd Peter Hjorth (14) 34pts

3rd Neil Wilkinson (11) 34pts

John Baxter.
John Baxter.

The start of the week saw a Monday visit to Greenwood.  With 7 of the group scoring over 30 points the competition was fierce and 34 points from Neil Wilkinson was enough to secure third place.

Petert Hjorth also scored 34 but a better back 9 from the great Dane saw him secure the second spot, however the top performance of the day came from Stewart Booth with one point more.  Stewart had been playing consistently well over the previous 2 weeks but this was the first time that he had topped the leaderboard.

Tuesday, May 23, Phoenix – Stableford

1st John Baxter (17) 41pts

2nd Alan Rothwell (5) 37pts

3rd Alun Webber (23) 35pts

Phoenix was the destination on Tuesday and it was good to see the return to Thailand of the sweet talking Australian Norman Cheetham.

Getting around Phoenix with a good score takes great planning and management of one’s golf swing.  With this in mind it was remarkable that Alun Webber’s “crab like” swing managed to claim third place with 35 points.  In second came Alan Rothwell whose gross score or 4 over par was easily the best of the day.  However, the winner by a comfortable margin was John Baxter with a fine score of 41 points.

Nothing ever seems to ruffle John and this held him in good stead on a course that in the past has driven many a man to distraction.

Thursday, May 25, Green Valley – Stableford

1st John Nicholas (10) 43pts

2nd Derek Thorogood (17) 37pts

3rd Happy Norm (15) 37pts

Thursday saw the TRGG visiting Green Valley.  Norman Cheetham shot a fine 37 points to claim third and was at the post pipped by “the boss” Derek Thorogood.  Always happy to see others succeed Norman would have been delighted that he was narrowly beaten by the man who for years has given him such lovely handicaps.

The winner of the day was John Nicholas who scored a wonderful 43 points from his 10 handicap.  This 3 over par score made him the comfortable victor and left everyone else trailing in his wake.

Friday, May 26, Burapha – Stableford

1st John Nicholas (9) 40pts

2nd Cheery Cheetham (15) 36pts

3rd Alan Rothwell (5) 36pts

The handicap of John Nicholas continued to tumble after Friday’s visit to Burupha.  Alan Rothwell’s fine form continued with 36 points coming from his 5 handicap, but he was bettered by Norman Cheetham as a result of Norman’s better back 9.

Yet no one could match John Nicholas whose 40 points saw his handicap once again tumbling, but at least happy in the knowledge he was becoming far richer doing so.

Saturday, May 27, Pleasant Valley – Stableford

1st Robert Asanuma (14) 40pts

2nd Mike Larn (21) 34pts

3rd Darren Stanton (14) 33pts

Saturday’s visit to Pleasant Valley demonstrated what a great leveller golf can be.  Two weeks previously Billy Allan had come away from the same venue having just played the round of a life time and 46 points.  This time it was back to normality for William as a rubbish round gave him a lowly 26.

Darren Stanton score of 33 points was good enough to take third place but he was closely beaten into the silver position by Mike Larn on 34.  The round of the day came from Robert Asanuma with a score of 40 points.  Playing his first game with the TRGG, Robert’s debut score of 4-under handicap made him very popular amongst the fellow members.
