More than 80 teams from 32 countries are expected to take part in the third Petanque Master Thailand tournament in Pattaya this year.

Wuthipol Charoenpol of the Pattaya Permanent Secretary’s Office met with Pierre Antoine, president of Petanque Kao-Rai Pattaya, Dec. 11 to begin initial planning for the March 8-10 contest.

Antoine said Thai players beat out professionals from France and Madagascar in the latest tournament.  That showed, he said, Thai amateurs can compete on the world stage and requested Pattaya sponsor the next meet.

Petanque is a form of boules where the goal is, while standing inside a starting circle with both feet on the ground, to throw hollow metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a “cochonnet” or jack.  The game is normally played on hard dirt or gravel, but can also be played on grass, sand or other surfaces.

Wuthipol said the meeting was a first step and covered organizational requirements and possible venues.
