PRACHINBURI, Thailand – A Thai woman was killed and three other people injured when two cars collided head-on on Highway 3079 in Tha Tum subdistrict, Si Maha Phot district, Prachinburi, at around 3am on October 17.
CCTV footage from the Tha Tum Subdistrict Administrative Organisation showed a Toyota Ativ driven by a Chinese man travelling against the direction of traffic for more than 200 metres from the direction of the 304 Industrial Park before colliding with a Toyota Altis driven by Sunita, who was heading towards the industrial estate.
The impact was severe, scattering vehicle debris across the road. Rescue volunteers from Sawang Bamphen Thammasathan and police responded to the scene. Rescuers pulled a Chinese passenger from the Ativ, while emergency workers broke the Altis’s window to reach Sunita and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). She later died.
Sunita’s passenger, identified as Kulpriya, was also injured. The Ativ was driven by a Chinese man identified as Mr Liang, with another Chinese man, Mr Yang, travelling as a passenger. Both were injured, bringing the total number of injured survivors to three.
When questioned by reporters, Liang said he had driven away from an entertainment venue before the crash. He said he could not remember driving against traffic and had only a vague recollection of the collision. He also said his friend remained in hospital and expressed condolences to the victim’s family, saying he was prepared to visit them to apologize. Liang said he had lived in Thailand for about 10 years.
Police at Si Maha Phot Police Station are gathering evidence, including CCTV footage and material from the crash scene. They are arranging for an interpreter to assist with questioning and are awaiting alcohol test results before deciding on charges and further legal action.
