Sukhumvit Road literally was drowning in traffic after a water main broke, bringing the busy thoroughfare to a halt.

Water was gushing like a fountain from a 50-centimeter-wide hole at the intersection of Sukhumvit and Chaiyaporntwitee roads Feb. 19. The highway was completely flooded, causing traffic to back up for nearly a kilometer.

Praphuet Gnam-kham of the Provincial Waterworks Authority had the valve closed for repairs, causing an outage in parts of Naklua and North Pattaya for several hours.

PWA said the water line was connected to a filtering plant and broke due to old age.
