Early morning chaos on Pattaya Beach as a dispute between tourists and “coconut tree women” turns violent over a canceled deal and deposit refund.

PATTAYA, Thailand – A lack of clear regulations surrounding freelance service providers on Pattaya Beach, particularly the so-called “coconut tree women,” has led to increasing friction between these groups and visiting tourists, with the latest clash turning violent in the early hours of May 19.

At approximately 4:16 a.m. on Sunday, Pattaya City Police responded to a reported brawl on the beach. Officers arrived to find a group of transgender women and foreign male tourists—each side numbering five to six individuals—visibly injured with bruises and contusions. The groups continued to argue aggressively until officers escorted both parties to Pattaya Police Station for formal questioning.

According to statements from the transgender individuals involved, the incident began when a group of intoxicated foreign tourists—reportedly Israeli nationals—approached them under a coconut tree along the beachfront to inquire about intimate services. A fee of 3,000 baht was agreed upon, with a 1,000 baht deposit requested as a safety guarantee. However, after the payment was made, the tourists allegedly changed their minds and demanded a refund.

When the service providers declined to return the deposit, a heated argument broke out. One of the transgender women claimed she was concerned for her safety and had suggested the tourists seek alternative providers, especially since the men appeared heavily intoxicated. The situation escalated when one of the tourists allegedly struck a member of the group with a bottle, triggering a chaotic street altercation.

Bystander video footage captured moments of the brawl, including individuals chasing each other and throwing objects. A good Samaritan—29-year-old local motorbike delivery rider—attempted to intervene but was also caught in the crossfire. His motorcycle and mobile phone were damaged after one of the foreign tourists allegedly grabbed a piece of wood and began swinging it indiscriminately.

A beachside clash leaves both tourists and transgender escorting workers injured—highlighting the dangers of unregulated services on Pattaya’s shoreline.

“I saw them attacking the woman, so I ran over to help. But one of the foreigners broke free and started hitting me and smashed my bike and phone,” the rider told reporters.

Currently, there is no formal governing body or pricing framework that oversees the activities of freelance workers along Pattaya Beach. Service prices, deposits, and expectations are negotiated on the spot, often under the influence of alcohol, leading to frequent misunderstandings and occasional violence.

The Pattaya Police Department has initiated an investigation into the incident, reviewing CCTV footage and collecting witness statements to determine the facts. Authorities have stressed the importance of fairness in the investigation and are working to decide whether criminal charges will be filed.

This incident once again raises questions about the need for clearer policies or designated zones to manage escorting work in Pattaya’s open public areas—especially along the beachfront—where tourism, nightlife, and local livelihoods intersect.
