Transport officials inspect public vehicles in Bangkok ahead of Songkran 2026, as authorities warn operators against overcharging and enforce strict safety measures during the holiday travel rush.

PATTAYA, Thailand – Thailand’s Department of Land Transport (DLT) has issued a warning to public transport operators not to take advantage of passengers during the Songkran 2026 holiday period, while stepping up inspections to ensure safety and fair pricing nationwide.

Speaking on April 12, Director-General Sorapong Paitoonpong said authorities are enforcing strict safety and service measures, deploying inspectors to monitor public transport at bus terminals and major tourist areas where large crowds are expected.

Operators and drivers of taxis, tuk-tuks, and motorcycle taxis have been reminded to comply fully with the law. All drivers must hold valid public transport licenses, and vehicles must be properly registered with yellow plates. Refusing passengers, overcharging, or failing to use meters in taxis is strictly prohibited.

For bus operators, stricter safety requirements are also in place. Drivers must have zero alcohol in their system, adhere to regulated working hours, avoid overloading passengers, and ensure vehicles are in proper condition before service.

Authorities are also targeting illegal and unregistered vehicles. Following a joint meeting on April 8 between the DLT and the Metropolitan Police Bureau, special task forces have been established across Bangkok and surrounding areas to crack down on unauthorized public transport services, which pose safety risks and are more likely to exploit passengers.

Officials warned that expired or unregistered vehicles found operating during the holiday will face strict legal penalties.

Passengers who encounter unfair treatment or safety concerns during Songkran can file complaints via the DLT hotline 1584, available 24 hours, or at complaint centers located at transport terminals nationwide. (TNA)
