Airport authorities urge nearby communities to avoid releasing lanterns, balloons, or lasers during the November 5 Loy Krathong Festival, warning of serious risks to aircraft safety and potential legal consequences for violations.

PATTAYA, Thailand – Suvarnabhumi Airport has issued a public advisory ahead of the Loy Krathong Festival on November 5, requesting nearby communities, government agencies, and private organizations to avoid releasing sky lanterns, fireworks, balloons, or laser beams. The airport cited potential hazards to aircraft and the need to maintain clear airspace for safe flight operations.

While recognizing the cultural significance of Loy Krathong, airport officials warned that objects released into the sky near flight paths can interfere with aircraft navigation, disrupt operations, and endanger lives. These activities are especially risky around active runways and approach zones, where safe and unobstructed airspace is critical.

Residents and event organizers near the airport have been urged to avoid such activities unless authorized by the relevant district office. Without prior approval, releasing skyborne objects may violate aviation safety regulations and result in legal consequences.

To raise awareness, airport personnel are conducting outreach in nearby communities, sharing information about the dangers of lanterns and lasers around the airport. These efforts also explain the legal risks involved, stressing the importance of public cooperation in protecting aviation safety during the festival period.

Suvarnabhumi Airport will implement additional safety measures during Loy Krathong, including increased inspections of runways and taxiways to remove potential debris. Surveillance will also be stepped up around critical zones, in coordination with Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd., to ensure the safe management of all inbound and outbound flights. (NNT)
