A witness said the African and a Thai woman were driving on the bar-heavy street where Thai men and bargirls were still splashing long after Songkran should end. Irritated with the traffic jam the revelers were causing, the woman gave the youths the middle finger. The teens, in return, started smashing the car.

Akononu got out and began arguing with the youths, only to have them beat him with bottles and motorcycle helmets. They then fled on motorbikes before police arrived.

Police reviewed CCTV camera footage in an attempt to identify the attackers.
