A sleepy sailor sent his pickup truck crashing into the sea when he fell asleep and drove through a roadside barrier in Sattahip.

Petty Officer 1st Class Sarawut Wattana-amorn, 30, was unhurt in the Jan. 7 accident on the beach road off the exit from Sattahip Naval Base before the Chao Mae Leam Tien Shrine.

The sailor from the Amphibious and Combat Support Service Squadron said he was driving home from work and must have fallen asleep behind the wheel before reaching the curve, resulting in the pickup overshooting the roadway and crashing straight into the sea. Fortunately it was a low tide otherwise he might have been drowned, he said.

Rescue crews took about an hour to fish out the vehicle.
