Twenty Senate Transportation Committee members visited the Royal Thai Navy’s Sea Turtle Conservation Center to better understand how the Sattahip facility is working to protect endangered reptiles.

Rear Adm. Noppadon Suphakorn, commander of Air and Coastal Defense Command, welcomed Sen. Pharanee Jongsukthanamanee, chairwoman of the transport panel, Feb. 2.

The group was given a briefing on the center’s operations and an overview of how revised laws and guidelines could help protect the Gulf of Thailand’s turtle population. Senators got a chance to see the Hawskbill, Ridley and Green turtles the center raises from eggs and set a one year-old Green turtle free into the gulf.

Pharanee wrapped up the visit by presenting 10,000 baht to Noppadon for food and supplies. She said afterward the visit helped her and other committee members understand turtle life cycles and conservation efforts.
