Pattaya officials called on residents and health volunteers to stay on the lookout for cases of rabies and any animals suspected of being infected.

Both Mayor Anan Charoenchasri and city spokesman Pinit Maneerat called on the public and Surveillance and Rapid Response Team members to be extra vigilant after the government declared Chonburi a “red zone” for rabies outbreaks.

Pets should be vaccinated – with the city offering free shots in communities across the city over the coming weeks – and stay dogs should be avoided.

Despite the public outcry for city hall to round up and control the stray population, officials said it was impossible to capture and vaccinate them all.

People can call the Public Health Department at 038-111-826 if they suspect a stray animal is infected.
