While soldiers in Pattaya kept mostly out of view, local establishments complied with the military’s overnight curfew order after the May 22 coup.

Restaurants, entertainment establishments and even the always-open 7-Eleven shops closed up at 10 p.m., not to reopen until 5 a.m.

Major shopping centers, too, along with cinemas, petrol stations and local markets fell in line, leaving residents and the few tourists left in town with nothing to do except go home, or back to their hotels to read a book, as even television and radio stations were shut down.
