Pattaya police put on a show of force on Loy Krathong to reassure tourists about their safety.
Police chief Pol. Col. Apichai Kroppech dispatched his officers as well as immigration police, soldiers, Banglamung District officials and police volunteers Nov. 20.
Their mission was to suppress crime to ensure safety of people and properly during the Loy Krathong weekend. He said deterrence is better than following up crimes once they occur.
Officers were ordered to check for drugs, guns, gambling, vice and arrest warrants, all in an attempt to prevent assaults, thefts and sexual attacks.
Special mention was made of Loy Krathong-specific offenses, such as using firecrackers, launching flying lanterns and shooting guns in the air.
